Frequently Asked Questions.
What is the right age to start learning the piano?
There’s no fixed minimum age to start learning the piano - and certainly no maximum! For younger children, it’s helpful if they can recognise the alphabet, count to ten, write their name, and focus on one activity for around 25 minutes. These are good signs they’re ready to begin. Adults are equally welcome - it’s never too late to start!
Do I need a piano at home to practice?
Yes - regular access to a keyboard instrument is important for making progress between lessons. This could be a traditional acoustic piano (upright or grand), or a digital piano or Clavinova. Good quality starter instruments can often be found second-hand at reasonable prices, and I’ll be happy to advise you on what to look for.
Do you teach for exams, or just for fun?
This is one of the most common questions I’m asked. People often think there’s a divide between “serious” exam-focussed learning and a “fun-only” approach - but in truth, good teaching should always be both structured and enjoyable. Exams can be a great motivator for some students, while others may prefer to focus on personal goals or favourite pieces. Either way, the choice is always yours.
Can I stay and sit in on my child’s lesson?
Absolutely - parents are very welcome to stay and listen during lessons, especially in the early stages. It’s a great way to see your child’s progress and feel more involved in their learning.
